A dental bridge can be either a fixed or capped with an adjustable apparatus that bridges the gap between missing teeth. By using either implants or crowns at each end of the gap, the missing teeth are replaced by porcelain and ceramic or metal, or just ceramic teeth that match your existing teeth in both color and structure.
When you have multiple missing teeth in a row, it can make you self-conscious about how you look and talk, and can stop you from smiling. While these are all important reasons to get a dental bridge, cosmetic concerns aren’t the most important reasons to consider a dental bridge.
By replacing your missing teeth with a bridge, you can restore your smile, but you will also improve how you chew, bite, and talk. Bridges also help to maintain the natural shape of your face, stopping your teeth or lips from sinking in where your teeth are missing.
Dr. Koeppen may recommend a bridge if you have a gap of two or more teeth. After completing a thorough examination and discussing your goals, Dr. Koeppen will go over your options, potentially including a fixed or removable bridge.
If you opt for a removable bridge, Dr. Koeppen will place a dental crown at each end of the gap. He'll make an impression, and then, based on your mouth and teeth structure, a bridge is created. Once it’s ready, Dr. Koeppen adjusts and fits your bridge, teaching you how to put it in and take it out.
If you decide to have a fixed bridge, Dr. Koeppen places either dental crowns or implants on both sides of the gap. In some cases, the bridge may need more than two crowns or implants. Once these are in place, an impression is made so that your bridge matches your teeth’s natural color and shape. Then Dr. Koeppen places a temporary bridge.
It can take multiple weeks before your permanent bridge is ready. Once it is, Dr. Koeppen removes your temporary one and places a bridge that’s made from ceramic zirconium or porcelain fused to either ceramic or metal. After being adjusted, he cements the bridge in place.
