Teeth Whitening Q & A

by Ross Koeppen, DDS

What causes teeth discoloration?

Teeth discoloration is caused by a variety of things. Some of the most common causes include:

  • Coffee, tea, soda, and red wine
  • Cigarettes
  • Genetics
  • Neglect

While teeth whitening procedures lighten teeth, if you continue to smoke or drink teeth-staining beverages, discoloration continues to occur.

What kind of teeth whitening options are available?

When you want to whiten your smile, you need the help of a dentist to get optimal, professional results. That’s why Dr. Koeppen offers his patients two different teeth whitening options.

At Dr. Koeppen’s office, you can have a one-hour Philips Zoom procedure and already have whiter teeth when you leave. The process takes about 45 minutes and whitens teeth up to eight shades lighter.

He also offers patients a take-home teeth whitening procedure. With just three uses, teeth can get up to six shades lighter. These pre-made trays are typically worn between three and four hours a day, depending on what Dr. Koeppen recommends.

What is Zoom teeth whitening?

Philips Zoom teeth whitening uses hydrogen peroxide to whiten teeth without damaging them. This non-abrasive system uses a special light in conjunction with a light-activated hydrogen peroxide gel. This gel and light system bleaches teeth without hazardous chemicals or toothpastes, simply removing the discoloration caused by coffee, tea, wine, or smoking.

Unlike other teeth bleaching systems, Zoom removes discoloration and stains from not only the top layer of your tooth (the enamel), but also the second, harder to reach layer (the dentin). This helps Dr. Koeppen remove those deep, hard to eliminate stains, giving you a brighter, whiter smile.

What happens during an in-office teeth whitening?

When you visit Dr. Koeppen’s office to have your teeth whitened, you’ll feel welcome and comfortable. After being shown to a private room, Dr. Koeppen applies the hydrogen peroxide gels and prepares the Zoom light that activates the whitening.

Once set up, the whole procedure takes about 45 minutes, during which time you can read, nap, or play on your phone. After the treatment is completed, your teeth are cleaned and polished, adding more shine to your smile.
